A fifth-grader at Stonewall Elementary, Des Hanley, was a runner-up in this season’s bookmark design contest in the Lexington Legends’ Hit the Books reading incentive program. Des was congratulated by team mascot Big L at his school.
“Hit the Books has been an important part of the Legends’ education and community outreach programs since 2001,” said Sarah Bosso, vice president of business development. “The bookmark contest adds an element of fun and competition.”
More than 48,000 students from 119 schools across Central Kentucky are expected to take part in the reading program, which runs through April 1. A baseball diamond is used to record credit. For every book a student reads, a teacher initials a base. When the student has covered all three bases and home plate, they can bring the bookmark to the box office at Whitaker Bank Ballpark to exchange it for two tickets to a home game.
