The boys’ tennis team from Henry Clay High School won the 11th Region championship May 11 at the University of Kentucky’s Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex. It was the Blue Devils’ 10th title in 12 years.
In the singles showdown, Matt Halpin of Paul Laurence Dunbar High School defended his title against Henry Clay’s Noah Tapp, winning 7-6 (7-4) 6-2. And in doubles play, Henry Clay’s Will Andrews and Matt Telfer defeated teammates Brett Folsom and Philip Priest 6-3 straight sets. All six players were named to the all-region team, along with at-large coaches’ selections Matt Castle of Henry Clay, Yasuo Uno of Dunbar, and Ian Walton of Bryan Station.
On the girls’ side, the all-region team included Grace Gardner and Lauren Moore of Lafayette (doubles), Madi Campbell and Destin Hardesty of Henry Clay (doubles), and at-large selections Anna Burch of Dunbar and Katie Robeson of Henry Clay.
In other honors, Henry Clay’s Noah Tapp and Madi Campbell each received the USTA Sportsmanship Award.
