Four students from Winburn Middle School will compete in the 2013 National History Bee championship June 1 in Atlanta. Eighth-graders Sameer Ahmed, Zachary Ross and Thirushan Wignakumar and sixth-grader Max Bograd advanced out of the April 8 regional contest in Lexington, where Thirushan placed in the top five. Earlier, Zachary was one of three students in the country to earn a perfect score on the online qualifying exam.
This individual academic competition for elementary and middle school students tests knowledge of a wide range of historical topics. It is divided into three stages:
- Online regional qualifying exam;
- Buzzer competition at sites across the United States;
- National showdown pitting the top students from the regionals.
Winburn was this year’s only participant in Fayette County Public Schools. The four top-scoring students on a preliminary written test at Winburn tackled the online exam, scoring high enough to move on. For more details, contact social studies teacher Michelle Cason at (859) 381-3967.
