Thirteen students from Fayette County Public Schools earned statewide first-place honors in the Kentucky PTA’s 2013 Reflections contest, advancing to the national competition. Congratulations to Mia Arrington of Liberty Elementary; Joshua Combs, Tates Creek Elementary; Jackson Gonzales, Liberty; Jenna Reed, Ashland; Emily Seng, Rosa Parks; Sierra Wyllie, Ashland; Sophia Zhou, Veterans Park; Joshua Atherton, Lexington Traditional Magnet School; Kacie Hughes, Edythe J. Hayes Middle; Matthew Hunt, LTMS; Mark Marji, Edythe J. Hayes; Billy Pence, LTMS; and Myo Zan, Morton Middle.

This year’s theme was “The Magic of a Moment.” The top young artists from across the Commonwealth will be recognized at an April 27 awards ceremony at the Embassy Suites in Lexington.

Reflections, a cultural arts program established by the national PTA in 1968, serves as an outlet for students to reflect on what they study in the classroom. Students may submit pieces in six categories: literature, musical composition, photography, visual arts, dance choreography and film production. Entries are judged at the school, district, state and national levels.

More than 2,000 FCPS students from 35 schools participated this year. The 220 school-level winners were featured during last fall’s downtown Gallery Hop, and district-level winners were recognized in a program at Norsworthy Auditorium.

The theme for 2013-2014 is “Believe, Dream, Inspire.” For general questions, email 16th District PTA Reflections chair Julia Craven.
