A group of Tates Creek Middle School students recently paused to thank two law enforcement officers who volunteered their time during archery practice this school year. Officer Tommy Jones of FCPS Law Enforcement and teacher Jenie Grant, who coached the team together, surprised Det. David Straub and Sgt. Billy Richmond with appreciation plaques signed by the youngsters.
“Every morning that we practiced, they came in and helped us by putting away equipment and interacting with students. Anything we needed, they stepped up to the challenge,” Jones said. “Usually when it comes to law enforcement, people hear negative remarks, but I think these two gentlemen need a special thank-you and pat on the back for their willing to get up earlier each morning to help a group of great kids.”
About two dozen students turned out for the 7 a.m. practices three days a week all season. Straub and Richmond, whose own children participate in archery, made a point to be there, too.
“They said at the opening meeting they’d need parents to help. Then it just became fun to watch the kids shoot,” Straub said.
Richmond, who parked his police motorcycle just outside the gym, said they mainly offered moral support as the students learned not only about archery but also about life. “It’s interesting to see friendships develop and character develop,” he said.
Straub and Richmond are part of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government’s Division of Police, while Jones works for Fayette County Public Schools.
