Salvador Hernandez of Bryan Station High School is the winner of the 2014 Congressional Art Competition, An Artistic Discovery, for Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District. His photography entry, “Colors in Ice,” will be displayed in the halls of the U.S. Capitol for the coming year along with winning art from other congressional districts across the country. Salvador will also be invited to travel to Washington, D.C., courtesy of Southwest Airlines for an artists reception.

Last year, a work titled “Atticus” by Bryan Station’s Gabe Baczkowski was picked to represent the 6th District. “Each time I walk past Gabe’s artwork on my way to vote in the Capitol, I am reminded of the creativity and skill that Kentucky’s young artists possess,” said U.S. Rep. Andy Barr, R-Ky. “It is always a point of pride to show visitors the winning piece from our district.  ‘Colors in Ice’ will be a welcome addition.”

The contest was open to all local high school students in Barr’s 6th Congressional District, which includes 19 counties across central and eastern Kentucky. Teens were encouraged to submit various styles and types of art, ranging from paintings and drawings to photography and mixed media pieces. Jeffrey Nichols, gallery director at the Living Arts & Science Center, and art education coordinator Sarah Campbell judged the entries.
