A fifth-grader who studies Japanese at Wellington Elementary is among the winners of the 2015 Nengajo “Year of the Sheep” contest, which drew 683 entries from across the nation. Alina Broughman took first place in the Computer Graphics category in the elementary schools division. (Nengajo are postcards sent as New Year’s greetings.)
Each winner received an award certificate and an Amazon gift card after the competition, which is sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Japanese. “To my knowledge, this is the first time a Kentucky elementary school student has won,” said Vanessa Grossl, who teaches at Wellington.
