Akshay Kalose, a junior at Lafayette High School, was a finalist in the international Google Code-In 2014. He completed 16 tasks for the Drupal open-source project during the seven-week contest.
Some 650 students from more than four dozen countries wrote code, added features to software, fixed bugs, created documentation, designed logos, and found fun ways to introduce fellow students to open source software development. Drupal, a highly extensible and modular content management system, was one of 12 sponsors that selected two grand prize winners and three finalists apiece.
“Many of my tasks were to review modules created by Google Summer of Code students and create documentation with videos for certain procedures,” said Akshay, who posted them on his blog at http://www.kalose.net/. “One of the most challenging tasks I completed, which took me a whole week, was documenting the creation of a load balancing setup for high traffic websites, which is accompanied by a one-hour screencast.”
In the previous year’s competition, Akshay was among the 20 grand prize winners invited to Google’s Mountain View, Calif., headquarters.
