LLY awardLeadership Lexington Youth (LLY) presented its 2015 Distinguished Leader Award to Erin Disponett of Lafayette High School. She accepted the plaque April 8 at the LLY graduation luncheon, hosted by Immanuel Baptist Church. “It’s been a fun experience to meet all these people from different backgrounds,” Erin said. “The one common factor is we’re all driven to make a difference, but it’s the diversity that makes it interesting.” She will also be recognized at Commerce Lexington’s annual dinner next February and will receive a $1,000 scholarship upon high school graduation.

LLY is an eight-month educational program that enables high school juniors to engage with community leaders and talk about issues, careers, business opportunities and post-secondary options. This year’s class included 44 students, mostly from Fayette County Public Schools. Emily Chavez of Henry Clay High School spoke at the luncheon about LLY’s impact and how she was inspired by the mentors as well as her peers. “Leadership is a combination of our talents, our interests and our passion to make things better,” she reminded fellow participants. “This program ends today, but these lessons will follow us so much longer. The Lexington of tomorrow is filled with ambitious and courageous young people, and I cannot wait to see the amazing things you do tomorrow and in the years to come.”

The Distinguished Leader Award goes to a class member who demonstrates strong principles, dedication to community service, creativity, good communication and interpersonal skills, and the potential to make a difference in the community. Those advocating Erin cited her compassion, respect, positive attitude, high energy and genuine warmth. One said, “She came to the program every day with an open heart and mind.” The selection criteria also include attendance record, participation and willingness to reflect on all LLY activities. Class members nominate candidates, and the program’s steering committee selects the winner.
