Bryan Station Middle School is among the 2015 Green Ribbon Schools designated by the U.S. Department of Education for its commitment to sustainable practices. “We care about our environment and our students holistically,” Principal Lester Diaz said after the Earth Day announcement. “We want to model a green and healthy citizenship for a life of learning and leading. Our teachers and students have worked hard, and I am extremely proud about this accomplishment. We want to continue to work on our green and healthy initiatives and expand on what we already have established.”
Bryan Station Middle was among Kentucky’s three nominees who were all confirmed April 22, including a middle school in Scott County and Western Kentucky University. In total across the country, 58 schools and 14 districts were cited for their exemplary efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, promote better health, and ensure effective environmental education, including civics and green career pathways. In addition, nine colleges and universities received the Postsecondary Sustainability Award. All the recipients will be celebrated June 3 in Washington, D.C.
“These honorees are compelling examples of the ways schools can help children build real-world skillsets, cut school costs, and provide healthy learning environments,” U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan said in a news release. “Green Ribbon Schools are an inspiration and deserve the spotlight for embodying strong examples of innovative learning and civic engagement.”
