BGCF mini grants finance teachers’ innovative initiatives

This fall, nearly 20 teachers with creative ideas for learning have received more than $15,000 from the Blue Grass Community Foundation, which provides mini grants for those who develop particularly interesting classroom programs or innovative projects. The grant money enables teachers to buy special materials and resources not covered in school budgets.  

The foundation is helping fund these initiatives during the 2012-2013 year:  

  • Athens-Chilesburg Elementary, $1,000 – Great Books Lead to Growth for All
  • Booker T. Washington Academy, $510.60 – Chinese Culture Traditional Dance
  • Booker T. Washington Academy, $1,000 – The Daily Five
  • Edythe J. Hayes Middle School, $541.29 – Teaching Social Skills in Middle School
  • Harrison Elementary, $931.85 – The Future Depends on Present Opportunity
  • James Lane Allen Elementary, $546.68 – Project See Theatre; Community Quilts
  • Julius Marks Elementary, $969.80 – Inquiry-Based Learning
  • Lafayette High School, $1,000 – Using Partner Schools to Create a Global Classroom
  • Leestown Middle School, $911.29 – Incorporating Digital Photography in the Art Room
  • Liberty Elementary, $1,000 – Multicultural Mask-Making
  • Picadome Elementary, $960 – Project-Greenhouse Learning Lab
  • Russell Cave Elementary, $371.76 – Large-Scale Playground Musical Instrument
  • Squires Elementary, $1,000 – Intellectual Disability Materials
  • Tates Creek Elementary, $500 – Hello Bites / Nutrition Education
  • Wellington Elementary, $1,000 – Japanese Calligraphy Writing
  • William Wells Brown Elementary, $1,000 – Expanded Learning Opportunities / Photography
  • Winburn Middle School, $924.90 – Drumming Up Success: World Music Drumming
  • Winburn Middle School, $861 – Meeting the Increasing Needs of Diverse Learners
  • TOTAL GRANTS – $15,029.17         

The Blue Grass Community Foundation, which was established in 1967, serves as a philanthropic partner to individuals, families, nonprofit agencies and businesses, helping them to invest in the causes they care about.
