The boys’ and girls’ track and field teams from Tates Creek High School secured first-place AAA honors at the 2016 KTCCCA indoor state championships in Mason County. The March 5 contests were sponsored by the Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association, and the Commodores are led by Coach Chris Hawboldt.
On the girls’ side, the Creek state champions included Heaven Bigelow in the high jump; Savanna Duff in pole vault; Emma Wells in the 3,000 meters; and Nakaiya Wearren, Brianna Payton, Waveney Brooks, and Tyanne Bentley in the 4x400 relay. Runners-up included Jordyn Hurley, Savanna Duff, Maddie Covey, and Emma Wells in the 4x800; Tyanne Bentley in the 400 meters; Aleisa Hardin in long jump; Rachel Browning in high jump; and Lauren Miller in shot put.
For the Tates Creek boys, state winners were Patrick Kelly in the long jump and the high jump; Ben Stone in pole vault; Alex Mortimer in the 1,600 and 3,000 meters; Obie Taylor in shot put; Kyle Sprague in 800 meters; Kyle Sprague, Alex Mortimer, Parker Terry, and Noel Dingle in the 4x800; and Trent Lieffring, Brody Sellers, Xavier Johnson, and Parker Terry in the 4x400. The runners-up included Ben Stone in 55-meter hurdles and high jump; Kyle Sprague in 1,600 meters; Xavier Johnson in 400 meters; Parker Terry in 800 meters; and Kyle Hopkins in pole vault.
In other FCPS highlights, Bryan Station’s Isaiah McCall won the boys’ 55-meter hurdles, and Anthony Franklin took the 55-meter dash. The Defenders’ Moses Botaka placed second in the boys’ triple jump, and Brook Raglin was second in the girls’ 55-meter dash. Overall, Bryan Station’s boys finished third in the team standings, and Paul Laurence Dunbar was seventh. In the girls’ field, Bryan Station tied for third place.
