Eighty-seven students from around the state attended the annual Kentucky Junior Classical League (JCL) fall forum, held Nov. 17 at Henry Clay High School.
The JCL is a nationally recognized organization devoted to the study and appreciation of the classical civilizations of Greece and Rome. At the forum, students participated in indoor and outdoor games, Certamen (quick recall for Latin) and crafts.
“It was an amazing chance for students to fellowship with one another and to experience a world not typically explored,” said senior Cullen Smith, JCL state president. “My delegation was a tremendous help in planning the fall forum, and we cannot wait to go to the convention in the spring.”
Cullen serves on the state board of officers along with senior Tommy Norman and junior Grace Campbell. They are advised by Latin teacher Andrew Gollan.
“No other language has a resource like JCL,” Gollan said. “It takes Latin out of the classroom into a range of exciting experiences and allows students to share their enthusiasm on a state and even national basis.”
The Kentucky JCL will host its annual convention Feb. 1-3 in Fort Mitchell. The event typically attracts about 400 students from all parts of the state.
