Dunbar, Lafayette bring home Beta Club awards

Paul Laurence Dunbar High School repeated as the Convention Sweepstakes award winner at the 72nd annual Kentucky Beta Club senior convention, held Nov. 30-Dec. 1 at the Galt House and Kentucky International Convention Center in Louisville. Lafayette High School’s club also secured individual honors. 

Athena Kern paced Dunbar, taking first place in cartooning, second in colored pencil drawing and third on the English exam. Congratulations to her fellow club members, too: 

  • 1st place, quiz bowl: Athena Kern, John Luan, Valerie Sarge and Will Walters, with John notching high score
  • 1st, agriculture exam, Christian Wright
  • 1st, math exam, Valerie Sarge
  • 1st, science exam, Joseph Schneider
  • 1st, Spanish exam, Vania Ma
  • 2nd for pencil drawing and 3rd for oil painting, Alice Liu
  • 2nd place, fabric painting, Xiaowan Chu
  • 3rd, team poster, Jessie Li and Maria Wang  

These Lafayette students also fared well: 

  • 2nd place, Spanish, Marie Armbruster
  • 2nd in Group Talent, string quintet of Aly Ackerman, Ethan Caudill, Janie Herbener, Sarita Hernandez and Da-yup Kim
  • 3rd place, French, Devin Morton

The National Beta Club promotes the ideals of academic achievement, character, service and leadership among elementary and secondary school students. The 2013 national senior convention is slated for June 19-22 in Mobile, Ala.
