On “Fly Tie Tuesdays,” members of the Alpha League at Bryan Station Middle School dress up to practice their professional look, and several times a year they teach classmates how to tackle a necktie, too. “Tie a Tie” is one of several projects led by the boys’ after-school club. The members also visit nearby elementary schools to share Bryan Station’s expectations – helping prepare incoming students and also enhancing their public speaking skills. And on “Talented Tuesday,” the Alpha League produces a five-minute talent showcase every week to gain experience in organization and teamwork.

The group’s mission is to develop leaders, promote excellence, and provide community service with class and dignity. One way is through presentations in which the students introduce themselves and offer insight into their vision of leadership. They also invite guests to engage in conversation about real-world experiences as they share personal achievements, failures, and advice. In another project, “Alpha League Goes to College,” the youngsters pair up to shadow college students.

Special education teacher Christian Adair, the club’s adviser, started this program based on a quote by Frederick Douglass: “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.” His goal is for the Alpha League to empower and inspire students as they develop strong characters. “They are required to examine themselves, step out of personal comfort zones, and explore different possibilities with a passion. I encourage them to practice what is learned and reflect on ways they can lead,” Adair said.

Bryan Station Middle’s Alpha League is open to male students who are nominated by teachers or administrators. After securing four recommendations, a nominee must obtain 100 signatures from classmates, friends and relatives who believe he can be a leader. The next step is an interview by a panel of three professionals and three college students. BSMS students with the top interview scores are then admitted into Alpha League.
