Students from 16 Fayette County public and private schools collected more than 138,000 aluminum cans during this fall’s Keep America Beautiful Recycle Bowl. In total, 3,949 pounds were recycled.
Competing in size divisions, the schools that collected and recycled the most cans per student received $750 each. The rest were eligible for one of six $450 awards. Congratulations to Cardinal Valley Elementary, a $750 winner (more than 600 students), and Wellington Elementary, a $450 winner. The STEAM Academy and Mary Todd Elementary tied for sixth place, with each getting $225. Schools in FCPS receiving certificates were Ashland, Meadowthorpe, and Rosa Parks elementaries; Leestown and Morton middle schools; and Carter G. Woodson Academy.
Central Kentucky Fiber, Keep Lexington Beautiful, and Lexington’s Divisions of Waste Management and Environmental Services contributed toward the monetary prizes. In addition, Baker Iron and Metal paid schools by the pound for the cans. The annual Recycle Bowl ran from Oct. 19 through Nov. 15, and city leaders recognized the schools’ efforts during the Dec. 3 Urban County Council meeting.
